We are in the midst of a most significant transition both historically and sociologically. What was called the Modern is yielding to a newly emerging configuration know as the Post Modern era. We are caught in the middle. The old values and the way we look at our major institutions such as the family, government, economy, communication, social relationships, religion and technology no longer have a solid basis in meaning for us. The new glue that would make sense out of these changing values and institutions has not yet dried. The old holds much less meaning while what is emerging is almost unidentifiable. The purpose of this website is to encourage discussion on what the future will look like as well as to highlight the issues facing all of us during this transition period. By looking at our values and institutions individually, I hope to bring the dynamics of this transition into better focus as well as paint a picture of where we are headed. I intend to bring this analysis to you piece by piece through my blogs and encourage all of you to chime in with your perspective on the subject at hand. My hope is that a dialogue will develop that will challenge us intellectually and perhaps help us find an anchor to secure our ship in this storm. Three major concepts describe post modernism: pluralism, subjectivity and the social construction of reality thru language. These constructs will act as a magnifying glass when discussing ideological and institutional aspects of our current situation. It argues that no one has a privledged perspective on reality, that one's beliefs influence one's perspective of it and that multiple realities exist simultaneously. |
